Here is how I remember the difference between introns and exons:
INtrons stay IN the nucleus and are not part of the mRNA.
EXons EXit the nucleus in the form of mRNA. To prevent the enzymes and the other things in the cell from destroying the mRNA, it "graduates" from the nucleus and receives a cap (and a tail) for protection.
So if you remember the in goes with intron because they both start with in- and exit goes with exon because they both have ex- you should be fine.
